Prussia was not a mono-ethnic state, a very large portion of its population was Polish. Actually the original Prussia (the one in the East, not Brandenburg), was a duchy within the Kingdom of Poland. Look at all the place names in Eastern Germany and at family names, a huge amount of them is Slavic. A typical Berliner would be called Dombowski, Schimanski, Wischnewski, Lewandowski, etc. The difference to Austria is, that in Austria the Poles were allowed to have schools, newspapers, theaters, public services, etc. in their own language, while in Prussia there was a strong pressure to Germanize. Furthermore the Prussians were Protestants (Lutherans and Calvinists), while the Poles within Prussia were Catholic. That led to a lot of tensions and especially the so called "Kulturkampf" in Bismarck's time. While in Austria the Poles and the Austrians had the same confession and no religious tensions existed (at least not between German Austrians and Poles).

I’m from California, and I’ve got to tell you… for the most part we get along all right with Texans. While some 100,000 Californians move to Texas per year, around 40,000 Texans move to California. We have a lot in common. We are the two of the largest states, We are the most populous states with large Hispanic populations. We have the two largest economies. We were both owned by Spain and Mexico at one point. We both were taken over through U.S. expansion and became states within 5 years of each other. We both experienced oil booms. The biggest difference is that while Texas was settled by mostly Southerners, California was mostly settled by Northerners, and really people from around the world during the gold rush days. So, we have different cultural perspectives, but not totally incompatible. There are plenty of somewhat conservative counties in California (Kern, Tulare, Kings, Shasta, Modoc, Lassen, etc.) and plenty of somewhat liberal counties in Texas (El Paso, Presidio, Zavala, Travis, Webb, etc.). The star on Californias State flag is in solidarity with Texas having become a state without ever having been a territory.
